Not only that the design of Sky Bridge optimizing the indoor environmental conditions with adequate air ventilation, lighting, thermal comfort, as well as minimizing noise and air pollutants, it also enhances passengers' airport experience by saving 50% of travel time between the two buildings compared to the use of shuttle bus and offering the view of Hong Kong International Airport to passengers to enjoy. Climate friendly refrigerant R410A and other alternatives are employed for air conditioning units and insulation materials to replace ozone depleting materials. A comprehensive waste management plan is implemented to recycle demolition and construction waste. For example, timber products used in the project are obtained from well-managed and certified sustainable forests to conserve the virgin forests. Use of environmental friendly materials is one of the green strategies in the project. This sustainable construction method can produce a final product with enhanced time and quality control, as well as minimised environmental impacts on adjacent buildings and ambience. The prefabricated steel segments were then transported to the HKIA and assembled on site to form the permanent structure of the bridge. To minimise the disruption to the busy airport's operation, the construction of Sky Bridge at HKIA used prefabrication method, which adopted pre-assembling large modules and components off-site. The project team focused mainly on the use of sustainable construction materials and construction methods to reduce waste during construction stage. The potential areas to be incorporated with sustainable designs and materials were reviewed and studied before the implementation stage. To ensure a green development throughout the design and construction stages, the feasibility of implementing green building technologies and materials was investigated and evaluated at the early stage.
